Artist Statement

Elise Rivera

In many of my pieces, I have been trying to convey certain emotional aspects of my life through symbolism. Every piece has a symbol of its own, a meaning, and in that meaning are even smaller symbols portraying a certain emotion or feeling behind it. Examples would be the bold X found on a number of my pieces, which represents elimination, being cast out, or silence. The black eye and angel eye could represent my 'black and white' mindset, my extreme points of view, etc. When in the creating process, it takes a lot of thought. Digging deep in my emotions to bring the proper aesthetic to the piece, and sketching ideas in sketchbooks, as to not lose the ideas. Sometimes, the art can come straight out of a recent experience, as to vent, giving the artwork pure authenticity from the moment, and visualizing how my mind processed the situation (e.g an argument resulting in a picture of heartbreak, or self-esteem deprivation; an eye-opening moment resulting in a picture of peace and harmony.) Since I began drawing, it became mostly a hobby, but then it became a place to cope with the ways of the world, it became a place to express feelings deep inside me I could never truly share with words alone. All of the pieces I have made here are just a small portion of the emotional journey I have yet to take, but I am glad I have made them, and it has helped me get out of my shell a bit and open up, which is why I made them, and why there will be many more to come.
